Limestone conveys calmness and serenity......

Limestone is widely used as a building stone because it is readily available and easy to work with. It is a sedimentary stone, layered and formed from the skeletons and shells of sea creatures that lived in vast, warm seas millions of years ago.

Most domestic limestone is gray to buff in color, while some pastel shades of yellow to pink are available. Imported limestone is available in colors ranging from light beige to
dark brown, red and black. When the mineral dolomite is present, the limestone is harder and capable of being polished
in the same manner as metamorphic marble.

Limestone as a Countertop Material
Velvety soft and smooth with minimal surface variations, limestone conveys a feeling of calm and serenity. This stone is often perceived as modern or contemporary in mood, making it perfect for a minimalist setting.

Limestone Color Variations
Formed by the sedimentary process underground and in riverbeds, you will often find characteristic seashells and fossils embedded in the surface. While it shares a color range similar to that of travertine, it is, for the most part, devoid of holes and depressions. Cream, ivory, gold, sand, and smoky blue-gray are the predominant shades found within this stone's color palette.

Beauty and Functionality

To guard against staining, it is wise to seal limestone's surface, and be sure to use extra caution when working with acidic substances. Some limestone types are considered soft, therefore extra care must be taken not to nick their surfaces with sharp objects or knifes. Some limestones are very dense and hard and can be incorporated with little concern for scratching and staining.

Don't be afraid to select this stone as your countertop surface, as it is truly a wonderful material that will age gracefully over the years.

For more informal interiors, limestone often proves to be a good choice. This sandy stone, readily available, often captures fossilized plant and animal life, giving it a certain primitive appeal. Unlike marble, limestone is most often honed to a matte finish. But the very fact that it is so absorbent makes proper cleaning and maintaining an imperative.

On the other hand, limestone is very much like marble in that it comes in a wide variety of colors. In its purest form, it is white or cream-colored, but specific minerals can cause diverse coloration. Iron, for example, will typically cause limestone to take on a red or yellow appearance while carbon tends to turn it gray or black.
